The Swedish Association of School Principals and Directors of Education
The Assocation was founded in 1966 and is also a member of Saco, the Swedish Confederation of Professional Associations.
The overwhelming majority of Sweden’s school Principals and Directors of Education with a career in school and education have chosen to join our Association.
The Members
The Association has about 7 300 members consisting of Principals, Assistant Principals and other persons with leading positions within the school system. Most of our members work in local elementary schools, high schools, or with adult education.
Local Organisation
In order to best protect its members’ interests, the Association has 300 local chapters, ideally one chapter for each municipality. The Association has about 500 local union representatives who represent members during local negotiations concerning salaries, personnel, organisational changes, working conditions, and other union issues.
Regional Organisation
The Association is divided into 24 districts across the country. The regional District Board assists local union representatives, arranges regional union training, and is the Association’s primary contact with the Central Board. In some regions we have union representatives with the same responsibilities as the regional District Board.
Central Organisation
The Association’s Central Board consists of nine members. approximately eight meetings are held per year. The highest decision-making body is the Congress, which meets every three years. There is also a secretariat with seven employees providing support to members and representatives.
The Association strives to achieve the following:
- Increase members’ awareness of their situation as employees.
- Increase understanding of the members’ importance to the improvement of the school system.
- Ensure that school leaders are trained in such a way that it supports and encourages their work in an organisation based on knowledge and leadership.
- Support school leaders in the work towards educational progress.
- Ensure equal rights of, and equal opportunities for, every individual.
- Ensure that the Association is working actively on important educational issues in politics.
The International Role
The Association has long been playing an active role in international issues and in building up a contact network abroad.
We are dedicated to developing international contacts and exchanging information, as well as informing school leaders about the international labour market and educational possibilities within the framework of the EU. This work also includes furthering the co-operation of the unions in the Nordic countries, the Nordic Forum. All Association members automatically become members ESHA, the European School Heads Association.
