The Swedish Association of School Principals and Directors of Education

The association was founded in 1966 and has as members a majority of Sweden’s head teachers and directors of education. The association is also a member of Saco, the Swedish Confederation of Professional Associations.

The Swedish Association of School Principals and Directors of Education strives to achieve the following:

  • The Swedish Association of School Principals and Directors of Education shall be the natural union for leaders in the school and educational sectors.
  • The Swedish Association of School Principals and Directors of Education shall provide its members with union service that shall be both fast and of a high quality.
  • The Swedish Association of School Principals and Directors of Education shall be a leading participant in national debates regarding school and education policy.

The work of the association shall be motivated by our vision, by striving for diversity and equality, our professional code of ethics and our educational program.

The members

The association has about 7,000 members consisting of head teachers, deputy head teachers and other persons with leading positions within the school system. Members hold leadership positions in preschool, preschool class, compulsory school, upper secondary school, adult education and supplementary school.

The organization

In order to best protect its members' interests, the association has 300 local chapters, with a goal of having at least one chapter for each Swedish municipality. The association has about 700 local union representatives, who represent members during local negotiations concerning salaries, personnel, organizational changes, working conditions and other union issues.

The association is divided into 24 districts across the country. The regional District Boards assists local union representatives, arranges regional union training, and is the association's primary contact with the Central Board. In some regions there is a union representative with the same responsibilities as the regional District Board.

The Central Board consists of nine members. The highest decision-making body is the association's Congress, which meets every three years. There is also a central office providing support to members and representatives.

The professional code of ethics

The Swedish Association of School Principals and Directors of Education has provided ethical guidelines for its members since 1991.

These guidelines stress members' responsibility for school administration and for achieving educational goals guaranteeing the equal rights of every individual, working in the best interests of the students, ensuring a good physical and mental work environment, upholding ethical values and providing a standard of professionalism.
